Hi, all. I've had a bit of a problem lately with two different kinds of spam comments showing up in my comments boxes--and, at the same time, a couple of perfectly legitimate comments being siphoned off into the spam box because for some reason Google apparently thinks a comment about gay marriage or the Hasidic community must be spam, but a comment by some person named "Generic Viagra" is not.
Anyway, for now all I've done is turn on the feature that lets me moderate comments made to posts older than 14 days old. Based on the way the spammers were cluttering up old posts, I'm pretty sure this will take care of most of the spam comments. I will also try to check the comments more frequently, which Google has made easier to do.
If the spammers get more persistent, I may have to initiate comment moderation for all comments for a brief period of time. It will be brief--I hate comment moderation because of the way it stifles commenter-to-commenter conversation. But I'd rather do that then have my regular readers annoyed by comment boxes full of gibberish (well, aside from my own comments, anyway!).
Just as a question, has anyone else using Blogger noticed an increase in spam comments lately? I've had two specific types: comments posted from various fake names which use spammer's English and are thus easy to identify (example: I am very liking this important blog post, and telling my friends that visit for interesting reasons!), and comments which seem legit and even fit the post, but are posted by someone like the "Generic Viagra" person who then hyperlinks his name to an online pharmacy website. I'd be interested to know if others have seen an increase in these two types of spam--have any of you?
